In recent years, Singapore has faced a significant challenge in maintaining consistent productivity (value added per worker). The overall trend shows a concerning fluctuation, with a sharp decline in 2023.

This variability in productivity aligns closely with another critical issue: low levels of employee engagement.

🔍 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:

𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬: Employee engagement in Singapore has been alarmingly low, dropping from 23% in 2019 to a mere 9% in 2020. Although it slightly recovered to 13% in subsequent years, it has stagnated without any significant improvement.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬: The value added per worker has seen substantial fluctuations, with a notable increase in 2021 (dead cat bounce?) but significant drops in other years, highlighting the instability in productivity.

Employee engagement refers to the level of enthusiasm and dedication a worker feels toward their job. Engaged employees are emotionally invested in their work and contribute positively to their organization. They are more productive, motivated, and committed to their company's goals.

💡 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: According to the research:

"Engagement variability directly impacts productivity. Employees who are inconsistently engaged are less likely to perform at their best, leading to inefficiencies and lower overall output" (Journal of Applied Psychology, 2023).

The "State of the Global Workplace 2024" report highlights that "engaged employees report lower levels of daily stress, anger, and sadness, and higher levels of enjoyment and optimism," which significantly enhances their productivity.

🚀 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝:

𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Implement initiatives that focus on boosting employee morale, providing growth opportunities, and fostering a supportive work environment.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: Develop strategies to ensure consistent engagement levels, reducing the peaks and valleys that lead to productivity variability.

𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: Address both the emotional and professional needs of employees to create a balanced and resilient workforce.

What will you do to transform your workplaces to foster higher engagement for improved productivity?
